Abstract

969,202. Gain Control. MINISTER OF AVIATION. Aug. 21, 1961 [June 2, 1960], No. 19522/60. Headings H3T and H4R. In order to control the gain of a transistor amplifier there is included in its signal path an attenuator in the form of a Wheatstone bridge having in at least one of its arms a variable capacitance, comprising a back-biased, semiconductor diode,- the effective value of which is dependent upon the amount of an applied D.C. bias derived.from the output of the amplifier. As described;. the arrangement is applied to, transistor amplifier comprising cascode stages SS1, SS2 in which the stage gain is controlled automatically by means of a gain control diode rectifier D3 feeding back a D.C. control.. voltage to these stages. In addition, a further cascode stage SS3 is provided feeding a diode rectified the D.C. output of which is smoothed by filter network R3, C5 and applied to vary the effective capacity of back-biased diodes D1, D2. The diodes D1, D2 comprise two arms of a capacity bridge network, the other arms of which comprise respectively a fixed capacitor CF and an adjustable capacitor CT by which the bridge balance may be adjusted. The bridge is fed with signal across one diagonal, by means of transformer T1 and the other diagonal feeds the signal to the amplifier input via transformer TO. The D.C. bias is applied to the diodes over resistor R2 and D.C. blocking condenser C4, a similar resistor R1 in series with corresponding condenser C3 being connected to the opposite corner of the bridge to maintain the balance.
