A centrifugal separator bowl having a peripheral sludge discharge slot 3 is provided with at least one annular flexible sealing member 4 or 4a arranged wholly or partially in an annular groove 8 or 8a communicating with the slot so that it can be caused by fluid pressure to change its shape for opening or closing of the slot. The sealing member may be made of rubber or synthetic plastic. The annular groove 8 or 8a communicates with vents 7. In Fig. 1, the sealing member 4, when not subjected to centrifugal force, does not seal the slot 3 ; when subjected to centrifugal force it closes the slot and when the pressure of the liquid acting on the sealing member due to centrifugal force rises sufficiently, the sealing member is deformed and allows the sludge to escape. In Fig. 2, a U-shaped member 4a is sealingly anchored at an angle in the groove 8a and liquid injected into a recess 10 is led through passages 9 to the groove 8a to expand the member 4a so as to close the slot 3. When the supply of liquid is stopped, the liquid present in the groove is evacuated through the vents 7 and the member is deformed to open the slot. In Fig. 3a, a channel-shaped member 4A is provided with a protective cover R lying freely on, or secured to, the top of the member and the supply of liquid to the passages 9 may be effected through a boring in the spindle 6 of the bowl. The sealing members of Figs. 1 and 2 may also be provided with a protective cover.
