Abstract

969,058. Stabilizing soil. PRODUCTS DEVELOPMENT CO. Dec. 20, 1961, No. 45611/61. Heading E1F. A method for stabilizing soils comprises mixing with the soil prior to compaction 0À1-5À0% by weight of the dry soil of a waterinsoluble, alkali-soluble protein (e.g. caesin glutenin, zein, gliadin, hordein or bynin) or a water solubilized sclero protein (e.g. glue or gelatin) and 1-20% of an alkaline earth metal oxide or hydroxide, Portland cement or one or more of these, the ratio of alkaline material to protein being at least 1:1. 0À5 to 3À0% of ferric oxide may be added as an acceleration. The temperature for mixing should be at least 40‹F. and the soil should be screened to pass a No. 10 screen (U.S. Bureau of Standards). The soil treated according to the invention may be used in the preparation of bricks, foundations for roads and other structures, piling, dams and levels.
