Abstract
An aqueous dispersion of a solid homopolymer or copolymer of an unsaturated substituted or unsubstituted hydrocarbon is contacted with component A which (1) consists of one or more organic liquids, (2) does not give an acid reaction towards the aqueous phase, (3) boils between -50 DEG C. and +200 DEG C., (4) has a stability at the temperature and pressure of the treatment, not exceeding 10 grams in 100 mol of water and (5) is such that, in relation to the polymer the value of the Flory-Higgins interaction parameter X of the organic liquid or the volume average X value of the collective organic liquid, is lower than 0.6, and with a component B which (1) consists of an organic liquid, (2) does not give an acid reaction towards the aqueous phase, (3) boils between -50 DEG C. and +195 DEG C., (4) has a solubility at the temperature and pressure of the treatment, of more than 10g in 100 ml of water and (5) containing more than one carbon atom in the molecule; the weight ratio of the sum of the polymer and component A to the sum of water and component B being at most 5, and then components A and B are removed from the dispersion. Preferably the weight ratio of polymer and component A to water and component B is between 0.5 and 3 while the component B may be mixed with the dispersion simultaneously with or after component A. Specified polymers are styrene-butadiene copolymers, polybutadiene, polystyrene, butadiene-acrylonitrile, neoprene, polyisoprene, polyvinyl chloride and polyvinyl acetate. Components A specified are benzene, toluene, xylene, cumene, chloroform and carbon tetrachloride, while isopropyl alcohol, acetone, methyl ethyl ketone, furfuryl alcohol, 2 methoxy ethanol, diacetone alcohol, dioxane, dimethyl ether, pyridine, nitromethane, ethylenechlorohydrin and methyl acetate are specified as B. It is also possible to use as solvent for the polymer a component A1 as a constituent of A with a parameter of at least 0.6. The dispersion to be treated may be subjected to concentration while the treated dispersion may have the components A and/or B removed with the aid of steam and then concentrated e.g. to a solids content of more than 55% by weight.
