Abstract

968,893. Electron beam apparatus; X-ray tubes. VARIAN ASSOCIATES. Aug. 15. 1961 [Aug. 24, 1960], No. 29435/61. Heading H1D. Apparatus for irradiating material, e.g. plastic material, with electrons or with X-rays, protons, deuterous or neutrons produced by the electrons comprises an elongated emitter, as shown, Fig. 2, an electron emitting filament 25 supported by a series of wires 26, a focusing electrode 28 and a tubular anode body and casing 14. A pulsating voltage is applied between the emitter and the anode, the whole arrangement producing a strip beam which passes through the window 21 on to the layer of material 11 which is in continuous movement under the window. The window, e.g. of aluminium, is supported by oblique ribs 1, 8, also e.g. of aluminium, and cooling pipes are shown at 44. An auxiliary electrode 29 may be provided, the electrode having grid wires 32 across the opening. A pulsating voltage is applied to the auxiliary electrode 29 in such phase that its positive half-cycle occurs during the mid-portion of the positive half-cycle of the pulsating voltage applied between the emitter and the anode. Additional intermediate electrodes may be provided between electrode 29 and anode 14 to reduce high voltage gradients. As shown, two irradiating heads 12 are provided for irradiating the material 11 on opposite sides. The material is passed through the irradiation heads slightly askew. The irradiation heads are rotatably mounted and are provided with extension shielding plates 43 removably attached to the flanges 16 on each of the heads. Where the irradiated material 11 is a cord or wire it is run back and forth past the irradiation heads twisting each time for uniform irradiation. For X-ray use the window 21 may be made of X-ray producing material, e.g. tantalum, or a portion of the tube 14 may be made of X-ray producing material, the tube 14 being rotatable with respect to the axis of the filament 25. In the latter case rotation of the tube 14 with respect to the strip beam may be arranged to change the machine from an electron to an X-ray machine. Several irradiating arrangements may be provided in one envelope.
