Abstract

A composition for use in the internal examination of animals particularly humans either living or dead comprises at least one fluorescent compound which absorbs ultra-violet radiation in the range of from 3000 to 3800 Angstroms, re-emits in the range of from 4000 to 5500 Angstroms and contains a carbon-carbon double bond adjacent to at least one aryl group, said aryl group containing, as substituents, one or more carboxylic acid or sulphonic acid groups, or a salt of such a compound, together with a carrier or diluent. The salt may be an alkali metal or ammonium salt or a salt formed from the group \sLN, R1, R2, R3, R4, wherein R1 is alkyl, aryl, hydroxyalkyl or hydroxyaryl and R2, R3 and R4 represent hydrogen or any of the groups representable by R1. The fluorescent compound may be a compound of formula <FORM:0968410/C4-C5/1> wherein R5 is an organic group attached to the nitrogen via a carbon atom, e.g. -COR10, wherein R10 represents an aryl group or <FORM:0968410/C4-C5/2> in which R6, R7, R8 and R9 represents hydrogen or organic groups. For administration to living animals, 1 to 13% of the fluorescent compound in a parenteral solvent such as water. The compositions may also be used as aqueous solutions buffered at pH 7.0. Other carriers are polyvinyl acetate, diethylene glycol and monoethanolamine. They may be administered in the form of cakes, pastilles, tablets, pills, capsules, dragees and other oral preparations; rectal preparations and parental preparations. They may be introduced into the hollow organs and excretory and secretory passages. The examination of the fluorescence produced by the compositions of the invention can be carried out visually, microscopically, photographically or photometrically. Specific examples, in general, are of stilbene derivatives, e.g. 2,21-disulphonic - 4,41 - bis(2,4 - di - anilino, 1,3,5 - triazinyl, 6-amino)stilbene.
