Abstract
The invention comprises a leather tanning agent produced by adding slowly, with agitation, an aqueous solution of lignic sulphonic acid to an aqueous solution of a hexavalent chromium compound consisting of chromic acid or an alkali metal bichromate in an amount of 25-50% by weight of the lignin sulphonic acid (expressed as "lignin solids", herein defined) to yield a reaction product containing chromium, at least 50% by weight of which is in a non-ionic form. Lignin sulphonic acid refers to lignin sulphonic acid obtained from neutralized sulphite waste liquors which, generally, have been neutralized with Ca or Mg salts and when spray dried give water soluble lignin sulphonate or "lignin solids". The term "non-ionic" means chromium which carries substantially no electrical charge as detectable by ion exchange techniques. The preferred chromium compounds are the bichromates, particularly sodium bichromate. The lignin sulphonic acid may be used as such or may be formed in situ by acidifying a solution of lignin solids with a mineral acid, e.g. with 35% by weight of H2SO4. Suitably a 50% by weight sodium bichromate solution is added to an aqueous solution of lignin sulphonic acid over a period of 1-2 hours with continuous agitation. The resulting solution has a pH of about 2, and may be used as such, but preferably is partially neutralized with alkali to raise the pH to 3.0-4.5, especially 4.0. The solution can be used as such for tanning (see Division C6) or spray dried at an elevated temperature. Example (1) describes the preparation of a solution containing 70.7% non-ionic chromium from sodium bichromate.ALSO:Leather is tanned by treatment with a composition containing chromium at least 50% by weight of which is in a non-ionic form obtained by adding slowly, with agitation, an aqueous solution of lignin sulphonic acid to an aqueous solution of a hexavalent chromium compound consisting of chromic acid or an alkali metal bichromate in the amount 25-50% by weight of the lignin sulphonic acid (expressed as "lignin solids"). "Lignin solids" refers to the material obtained by spray-drying the lignin sulphonates formed by neutralizing sulphite waste liquors with Ca or Mg salts. The tanned leather may be retanned with known tanning materials. Example (2) describes the tanning of pickled steer hides. In Examples (3) and (4) the thus-tanned leather is retanned with a chrome sulphate and vegetable tannage respectively. In Example (5) the leather from Examples (2) and (3) is fatliquored with a cationic-non-ionic animal type fat liquor. Examples (6) to (8) describe the properties of the leather tanned by the present process.
