Abstract

968,189. Radiation dose effect determination. VAKUTRONIK VEB. Sept. 15, 1960, No. 31801/60. Heading G1A. [Also in Division H5] The dosage effect of radiation such as # or gamma radiation having a varying energy spectrum is measured by a detector through an intervening layer having a varying absorption over its surface of the incident radiation; measurements are made with and without the absorption layer. The layer may be wedge-shaped, so that an increasing proportion of the high energy radiation is absorbed by the thicker parts of the wedge. Thus the comparison measurement made takes account of the energy, as well as the density, of the radiation. Fig. 2 shows two bell-shaped counter tubes 1, 2, the entry window of tube 2 being covered by a lens-shaped absorber screen 3. In the arrangement of Fig. 3 the anode wire 5 of the counter tube is divided into two parts by a glass bead 7. Thus the tube is in effect divided into two sections, an upper part without any absorbing layer, and a lower part surrounded by the frusto-conical layer 8, so that the two measurements can be made with a single tube. In the arrangement of Fig. 5 (not shown) the absorber is in stepped formation. Instead of having a varying thickness, the absorber layer may be of varying density. Further, the absorber area may be subdivided into a number of part areas, each acting as a separate variable absorber.
