Abstract

1,131,406. Neutron well logging. TEXACO DEVELOPMENT CORP. April 22, 1966, No. 17836/66. Heading G1A. [Also in Division G6] An epithermal neutron detector comprises a thermal neutron detector surrounded by a front layer of neutron thermalizing material which is enclosed within a second layer of thermal neutron absorbing material. The thermal neutron detector may be either a proportional counter or a photomultiplier tube associated with a scintillator material. In a bore-hole logging arrangement the epithermal detector is associated with a fast neutron source from which it is isolated by radiation shielding. In operation, the epithermal neutrons pass through the second layer of thermal neutron absorber, as thermalized in the first layer and pass through into the detector. The second layer may be gadolinium or dysprosium and the first layer, paraffin wax, plastics, oil or water. The proportional counter contains boron trifluoride and the scintillator material, europium activated lithium iodide, lithium fluoride or bromide, or lithium activated plastics or liquid. Separation of radiation signals is effected by a discriminator circuit.
