Abstract

Fibres, foils and other shaped structures of a linear aromatic polyester or of a polyamide are dyed or printed with an aqueous dispersion of a dyestuff free from carboxylic and sulphonic acid groups of the formula <FORM:0967893/C4-C5/1> or the oxime thereof, in which the group R-CO- stands in ortho-, meta- or para-position to the azo group, R represents a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group of 1-4 carbon atoms, the benzene radical A may be substituted by further groups, such as methyl, ethyl, methoxy or ethoxy groups or chlorine or bromide atoms, which do not impart solubility in water, and B represents the radical of an aromatic or heterocyclic O-hydroxycarboxylic acid arylide. Dyeing may be effected, with or without carriers, at temperatures up to or above 100 DEG C., and prints are preferably heat treated at about 200 DEG C. When the oxime of the above dyestuff is employed, it may be added as such to the dyebath or paste or may be formed in situ, in the bath or paste, from the dyestuff and a salt of hydroxylamine. Alternatively, a dyeing obtained with the above dyestuff may be after-treated with a salt of hydroxylamine at an elevated temperature, e.g. 100 DEG C., to yield the oxime. The dyestuffs are made from the diazo compounds of, for example, 4-aminobenzaldehyde, 4 - aminoacetophenone, 2 - aminoacetophenone, 3 - aminobenzaldehyde, 3 - aminoacetophenone, 6 - chloro - 3 - aminobenzaldehyde, 3 - chloro - 4 - aminobenzaldehyde, 4 - aminobenzaldoxime, 4 - aminoacetophenoneoxime or 4-aminobutyrophenone oxime and (as coupling components) N-[21-hydroxy-31-naphthoyl] - 4 - aminotoluene, - 4 - aminoisopropylbenzene, - 4 - aminoanisole, - 4 -aminophenetole, - 2 - amino - b - methoxyphenetole, - 4 - amino - b - methoxyphenetole or - 1 - amino - 2 : 4 - dimethylbenzene, N - [21 - hydroxycarbazole - 31 - carboyl] - 4 - aminoanisole or - 2 - amino - b - methoxyphenetole.
