967,866. Moulding presses. CHAMPLAIN-ZAPATA PLASTICS MACHINERY Inc. Oct. 16, 1962 [Nov. 1, 1961], No. 39198/62. Heading B5A. A moulding press includes a platen 14, movable towards or away from a stationary platen 12 by a double-acting main cylinder 16, hydraulic stops 150, 152 including cylinders and plungers 154 o the stationary platen directed towards the movable platen, and effective against stop members 156, 158 on the movable platen when keeping the mould partially open part of the time during the moulding cycle, and being moved back when the mould is clamped closed. The stop members 156, 158 are preferably in the form of adjustable stop screws having their effective stop surfaces at 164, and also carrying a stop nut 166 the position of which is adjustable. Positive stop surfaces 162 surround the plunger 154 of the hydraulic stops 152. When the plunger 154 is projected it acts on the stop screw surface 164 before the positive stop nut 166 reaches the positive stop surface 162. The distance between the two stop positions determines the amount by which the mould is opened. A motor 170 drives a low-pressure pump 172 and a highpressure pump 174, the system being controlled by three solenoid-operated valves 178, 180, 182. Check valves 184, 186 may also be provided. The platens comprises vertical ways 18 at their side edges with horizontal grid bars extending between the ways, the top and bottom grid bars 20 and 22 being fixed to the ways and the intermediate grid bars 24, 26, 28, 30 being adjustably movable up and down by means of crank and sprocket chain mechanism.
