Abstract

967, 609. Distributing fluids; regulating fluid flow. A. JOHNSON & CO. (LONDON) Ltd. June 4, 1963 [June 5, 1962], No. 21651/62. Heading G3H. A fluid flow divider 10, which has its inlet 5 connected to the vented condensate pipe of a fractionating column 8, incorporates chambers 1a, 1b, each partly formed by a bellows. The divider provides a reflux stream and a product stream, the former being returned to the column 8. The inlet 5 is fixed, as is an opposing and coaxial abutment 6, whilst an orifice plate 4 connected to both bellows is movable between the adjacent ends of the inlet 5 and abutment 6 to alternatively connect the inlet to the reflux and product streams via the chambers 1a, 1b, respectively. The chambers have rigid end plates 2, 3 which may be relatively adjustable. The plate 4 is oscillated through a gimbal mounting 12 and a stirrup 13 from a pair of electromagnets 14a, 14b alternately energized under the control of an adjustable cyclic timer. The electromagnets may be replaced by solenoids or hydraulic or pneumatic cylinders.
