Abstract

The invention comprises compounds of the general formula: <FORM:0967492/C1/1> (wherein R1 represents a hydrogen atom or an alkyl radical, and R2 represents a dialkylamino, pyridylamino, guanidino, phenyl or dialkyl-aminophenyl radical, or a 2-, 3- or 4- pyridyl radical, optionally substituted by one or two alkyl radicals, or by a halogen atom or by a hydroxy radical and an alkyl radical) and acid addition and quaternary salts thereof, and their preparation by (a) reacting a compound of the general formula: <FORM:0967492/C1/2> (wherein Y represents a halogen atom) with a compound of the general formula R2.CS.NHR3 (wherein R3 represents a hydrogen atom or a C1-5 alkyl radical), or (b) reacting a compound of the general formula: <FORM:0967492/C1/3> or an acid addition or quaternary salt thereof, with an acyl nitrate and treating the resulting intermediate with a base, optionally followed in either case by conversion to an acid addition or quaternary salt where such a salt is not obtained directly. 5-Nitro -2- furyl chloromethyl ketone is prepared by treating an etheral solution of 5-nitro -2- furyl diazomethyl ketone with dry hydrogen chloride. 2,6-Dimethylthionicotinamide is prepared by saturating a solution of 3-cyano-2, 6-dimethylpyridine in ethanolic ammonia with hydrogen sulphide. 4,6-Dimethylthionicotinamide and 2-hydroxy -6- methylthionicotinamide are prepared similarly. 4-(2-Furyl) -2- (3-pyridyl) thiazole is prepared by heating 2-chloroacetylfuran with thionicotinamide in ethanol. The compounds of the invention possess antibacterial and antiprotozoal activity. According to the Provisional Specification, R2 may represent an amino, hydrocarbon or heterocyclic radical, which may optionally be substituted.
