Abstract

966,888. Friction clutches. AUTOMOTIVE PRODUCTS CO. Ltd. May 25, 1962 [June 1, 1961], No. 19816/61. Heading F2C. An automatic adjusting device, for taking up wear in a twin disc clutch, comprises an axial pin secured to the driving member of the clutch, and a spring steel washer associated with the intermediate drive plate of the clutch and movable along the pin in one direction only, the washer being shifted progressively along the pin as wear of the clutch plates takes place. As shown in Fig. 1, a twin plate clutch comprises a driving flywheel 7, an intermediate drive plate 6 and a further drive plate 8. A pin 1 is secured to the flywheel 7, and a spring steel washer 2 mounted on the pin is located with play in a slot 9 in the intermediate plate 6. The washer is dished and has radial slits providing tongues 4 which permit axial sliding of the washer along the pin towards the flywheel 7, axial load .applied to the washer and tending to move it in the opposite direction causing the tongues 4 to grip the pin 1 and restrain such axial movement. The play between the washer 2 and the walls of the slot 9 thus determines the disengaged position of the intermediate clutch plate 6, and the washer is shifted along the pin 1 as the clutch plates wear to maintain the clearance between the clutch plates constant when the clutch is disengaged irrespective of wear. Fig. 7 shows the wear adjuster applied to a twin plate clutch which is engaged by a diaphragm spring and which has a flywheel 18 connected to an intermediate drive-plate 19 by tangential drive straps 20. In this embodiment the spring steel washer 2 of the adjuster is disposed in a gap 21 provided between a recess formed in one face of the intermediate drive plate 19 and the outer end portion of the strap 20 which extends over the recess. The pin 1 is screwed into the flywheel 18 and passes through clearance holes in the strap and the intermediate drive plate. In a modification of this arrangement the steel washer 2 is disposed in a slot in the intermediate drive plate as in the first embodiment. The spring steel washer may have gaps between the tongues instead of radial slots.
