Abstract

966,887. Two-part couplings. PAINTON & CO. Ltd. May 25, 1962 [May 29, 1961; July 27, 1961], Nos. 19382/61 and 27340/61. Heading H2E. A resilient metal contact comprising a contact blade with a portion bent to overlap the side remote from the blade contact face is mounted in a cavity in an insulating carrier with the bent portion pressing against an adjacent cavity wall. In one contact 3 (Fig. 1), the overlapping tongue 19 is bent from the top of the blade 13 and has a heel 20 which, together with lugs 18 on the shank portion 14 of the blade co-operates as shown in Fig. 7 with recesses in a cavity 4 to prevent longitudinal movement. Blades 13 project beyond the front surfaces 5 of their respective carriers to enter a part of the cavity opposite, when tongues 19 are deformed to press the blade contact faces into engagement. The blades 13 may be reinforced by flanges 24 or by longitudinal ribs, and are preferably made of a copper-nickel-silicon alloy. In a slightly different construction (Fig. 4), two tongues 49 overlap a blade 43 from each side, and are connected thereto by a narrow neck 49a, the contact being mounted as shown in Fig. 7. Fig. 5 shows a connector incorporating the above contacts 3, with identical moulded synthetic resin carriers 1 and 2 having interfitting two-part rims 6, 7 which protect projecting blades 12. Various modifications to the above contact and carrier constructions are described, in which the mating contact blades may be of unequal length and may engage wholly in the cavities of one carrier (Fig. 11, not shown), each blade may have projecting flanges co-operating with grooves in its cavity to prevent excessive lateral displacement on engagement (Fig. 8, not shown) and another shape of connector may be used (Fig. 9 not shown).
