Abstract
990,416. Two-part couplings. PAINTON & CO. Ltd. May 30, 1962 [June 2, 1961], No. 20042/61. Heading H2E. The insulating bodies of plug-and-socket connector halves 1, 2 are composed of moulded components such as 3, 23, 33 with recesses 11 which co-operate with the adjacent component to define contact-receiving cavities. The components, which are of synthetic resin, may be resilient, and may be of different colours, are interfitting, having tongues 4, 24 and corresponding recesses 8, and are additionally secured together by a rod 10 passing through central holes 9 in the components, an end plate 43, and brackets 17. The halves 1, 2 comprise identical component blocks which are each formed with two recesses 11 or 1 1a having slots 13, 14 at either end. Plug contacts 15 or socket contacts 16 may be inserted into the cavities between the co-operating flat and recessed faces of adjacent blocks. Each plug contact 15 extends through slots 13, 14 to provide respectively a blade portion P and a wiring tag S, and is locked into its cavity 11 by stamped-out tags T. Each socket contact 16 consists of a strip bent as shown to form a wiring tag W and contact portions B which fit into cavity 11a and engage a mating plug blade P when the latter is passed through the flared entry slot 13a. Grooves 21 and ribs 22, 22a on the component blocks provide air spaces to prevent shortcircuiting due to surface moisture. Contacts 15, 16 are made of silver-plated phosphor bronze. In another embodiment (Figs. 4, 5, not shown) each component contains three recesses and therefore the assembled connector has three rows of mating contacts.
