Abstract

Wax-based surface-protecting compositions contain an organosiloxane and an organozirconium compound of the general formula: <FORM:0965962/C3/1> wherein X1, X2, X3 and X4 are selected fro alkyl and alkoxy groups, the organozirconium compound being present in a proportion of at least 0.2% and less than 15% by weight of the composition. The alkyl groups are preferably methyl, ethyl, isopropyl or butyl groups and the alkoxy groups are preferably methoxy, ethoxy or butoxy groups. The organosiloxane may be an oil, a "fluid", a gum or a resin in which the organic groups are, for example, methyl, phenyl or vinyl groups. In the examples, a solution of butyl zirconate and a silicone resin (prepared from a mixture of methyltrichlorosilane, dimethyldichlorosilane and trimethylchlorosilane) in toluene/butyl acetate is added to a wax base material consisting of paraffin wax, beeswax, Microflex 185, synthetic azokerite A, azokerite 360, straw-yellow crystalline wax and oil of turpentine and the resulting polish is compared with a mixture of the wax-base material and the same silicone resin. The compositions are preferably prepared by adding the organosiloxane and the organozirconium compound simultaneously to a film-forming base material.
