Abstract

965,921. Earth sampling apparatus. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. May 28, 1962 [June 2,1961], No. 20085/61. Heading E1F. Apparatus for sampling sub-aqueous formations comprises a sample container 1 having an open end, a framework 19 for supporting the container with its open end against the formation, means 2, ......, 5 for moving the container so that its open end protrudes from the framework into the formation, and means 10 closing the open end as the container is withdrawn from the formation. The apparatus is lowered to the formation on the cable 5 attached to the weight 4, the gates 10, 17 being open. When the apparatus rests on the formation the weight is reciprocated on the guides 3 to strike the container anvil 2 to force the container into the formation and close the gates 17. As the container reaches its maximum penetration spring loaded bolts 22 move inwardly over the ends 14 of rods 12 and release floats 29 to indicate that the apparatus may be raised with the sample. The apparatus is raised by the cable, the rods being forced downwardly to close the gates 10. The sample may be examined through the gates 17 or by removing one or both sides of the container.
