Abstract

A plastic coated electrical device, the electrical leads of which protrude from its opposite ends, is prepared by applying substantially to the entire length, other than the root end, of at least one of the leads a liquid coating of thermoplastic resin compound or hydrocarbon wax of relatively low melting point or flow point, thereupon dipping the entire surface of said lead and the entire surface of the device other than the opposite lead into a liquid bath of thermosetting resin, thermosettable at a temperature above the flow temperature of the thermoplastic resin, removing the coated device from the bath, and thereupon heating the device to not less than the flow temperature of the thermoplastic resin and well below the thermosetting temperature with the lead that had been coated therewith extending downwards, whereby the thermoplastic resin will flow downwards and thereby clean the lead of both the thermoplastic undercoat and the thermosetting overcoat thereon. The device may be a resistor, capacitor, inductance coil, rectifier, transistor or other insulation coated unit with one or more protruding leads, prongs or contact points. The thermoplastic material may be of low molecular weight polyethylene, a mixture of low molecular weight polyethylene with a hydrocarbon wax, a polyamide, or a wax. The thermosetting resin used may be an epoxy resin or a mixture of a polyester resin and styrene. The composition may also include a mixture of metaphenylene diamine and dimethylaniline, fillers such as clay, mica dust, aluminium silicate, and asbestos powder, and pigments such as iron oxide. A peroxide catalyst may also be present. The coated device is finally cured by heating.
