965,758. Pelleting forage crops. MASSEY-FERGUSON Inc. Aug. 19, 1960, No. 23400/60. Heading A2B. [Also in Divisions B5 and F2] A machine for treating cut agricultural crops e.g. forming pellets of hay &c. from a flow of material being advanced through compressing means, includes a sensing device which varies the speed of the treating means according to the amount of material entering the machine. The invention is described with reference to a hay pelletizing machine and in this, hay is gathered by the usual pick-up reel 21 and guided by conveying plates 28 between upper and lower converging belt conveyers 30, 32. The conveyer 32 pivots about a shaft 45 and is supported at its inner end by a roller 90 which runs on the hay. Pressure exerted by the roller 90 on the hay is adjustable by means 95, 96. The hay already compressed, is formed into pellets between the involute teeth of gears 51, 52, plates (61) 62 confining the material above and below the teeth. Rotary blades 132, 141 knock the pellets from between the teeth for removal by a conveyer 70. Variations in the height of the roller 90 due to the material passing beneath are transmitted by a cable 120 to the control arm 110 of a variable speed device 100 (see Division F2) in the drive between the motor 15 and the gears 51, 52. An increase in the amount of material flowing causes a speed-up of the gears.
