A photographic printer has a series of interchangeable masks for different print sizes, each mask having means (e.g. lugs, contacts &c.) for co-operating with corresponding parts on the printer itself to cause automatic mechanical or electrical adjustment of such variables as paper advance, cutting or marking means, exposure control &c., all by the single operation of inserting the mask into the printer. Fig. 1 shows a rear wall 1 and a horizontal partition 2 of the printing apparatus. Partition 2 has a rectangular opening 3 in which can be placed an interchangeable mask 4 having an exposure opening 5 corresponding to a particular size of print. Below the mask is a displaceable carriage 8 carrying a bracket 9 having a forked upper end 12. On the carriage are fixed a stamping assembly 13, a marking element 14, and a cutter 15a. Each mask has a pin 11 fixed thereto, and on inserting the mask into the printer, the pin 11 is first inserted into the fork 12 and then the carriage 8 moved to bring the mask into position in opening 3. The elements 13, 14 and 15a are thus automatically brought to the correct position. A rack 16 on carriage 8 engages with a pinion 17 to operate an adjustable paper feed mechanism, Figs. (not shown) 2 and 3, described in more detail in Specification 954, 764 [see Division B6]. The exposure value is controlled by a regulating means 56 adjusted automatically according to both the length and width of the print. One pair of a series of pairs of electrical contacts 63, 64 is closed, according to which mask is being used; this gives the regulator a setting value according to the width of the print. The pinion 17 engages with another pinion 57 which moves a sliding Contact arm 58 along a resistor 59; this transmits to the regulator a setting value according to the length of the print.
