Abstract
850,723. Marking bread-wrappers. GOTTSCHO Inc., A. Feb. 23, 1959 [March 25, 1958], No. 6108/59. Class 100(2) A web of wrapping material e.g. waxed paper or Cellophane (Registered Trade Mark), is marked with indicia as it is fed into a breadwrapping machine by means of a die which is actuated in synchronism with the intermittent advancement of the web to make an. impression on the web when the latter is stationary through a pigmented tape fed between the die and the web in a direction transverse to the direction of advancement of the web. The wrapping machine comprises side frame members 22, 24 connected by rods 26, 28 which support a plate 30 (shown only in Fig. 3). The web of wrapping material is fed in a direction parallel to the frame members 22, 24 over the plate 30 toward a knife which severs it into lengths. A platen 38 is mounted on a support 44 secured at its opposite ends to the rods 26, 28 and projects into a hole 36 in the plate 30. A shaft 32 is journalled in the frame members 22, 24 and carries a clamp 34. During operation of the machine the shaft 32 is oscillated by mechanism not shown so that the clamp 34 holds the web in contact with the plate 30 for the marking operation and is raised out of contact with the web when the latter is advanced over the plate. A tube 74 is rotatably mounted on the shaft 32 and has a radial arm 76 connected by a link 114 to a bell-crank lever 120. The printing head 78 is adjustably clamped to the tube 74 and is formed on its under-side with a dove-tail groove 82 which receives a correspondingly shaped projection on a housing 84, a clamp plate 88 on the printing head extending into a cut-out in the groove 82 so as to clamp the housing 84 at any desired radial distance from the tube 74. The housing 84 has a transverse recess 94 in which is mounted a case 96 retained therein by a set-screw 101. Type 100 are removably mounted in the case 96 and are heated by an electric heating element 92 in the housing 84. The platen 38 consists of a member 48, a block 60 and a resilient pad 70 detachably secured to the block 60. The member 48 is secured to the support 44 by a bolt 52 which is engaged in a vertically elongated slot 54 in the support so that the platen can pivot about the bolt and can also be moved up and down by sliding of the bolt in the slot. The position of the platen is determined by set-screws 58 passing through lugs on the support 44 and on which the member 48 rests. Blocking foil 42 is fed from a reel 134 rotatably mounted on the frame member 22 between the printing head and the platen by feed rollers 164, 166 mounted on the frame member 24, guide rollers 146 being provided for the foil. The feed roller 164 is rotated intermittently through gearing and a one-way clutch by a pneumatic ram 188 and the printing head is oscillated to effect printing by the action of a second pneumatic ram 128 on the bell-crank lever 120. An arm 258 fixed to the shaft 32 opens a pilot valve 240 in the pneumatic circuit when the clamp 34 is engaging the web of wrapping material; the piston of the ram 128 is thereby caused to move downwards so that the heated type 100 make an impression on the web through the blocking foil 42 and the piston of the ram 188 moves upwards, the feed roller 164 remaining stationary, however. When the clamp 34 is lifted from the web the arm 258 allows the valve 240 to close whereat the movements of the ram pistons are reversed so as to raise the printing head and feed the blocking foil one step onwards. In a modification the pilot valve 240 is actuated by a cam on the main shaft of the machine.
