Abstract
A method of making hardened gears of austeno-martensitic stainless steel is charaterized in that a blank is completely hardened, then tempered, the gear teeth are then cut and the gear is finally heat treated. Internally toothed annuli, internally or externally toothed annular helical gears, and bevel, spiral bevel or hypoid annular gears may be made by the method. An oversize blank of a stainless steel having 15-17% chromium, 3-4% nickel and 2.5-4% molybdenum and not more than 0.2% carbon is first prepared. The blank is then hardened by heating for thirty minutes at 960 DEG C., cooling for two hours at -80 DEG C. and age hardening for two hours at 400 DEG C. An additional tempering for two hours at 580-620 DEG C. is then carried out. The blank is then reduced on a lathe or grinding machine to the dimensions contemplated for cutting the teeth. The teeth are then cut by, for example, a Fellous machine. The complete part is then given a hard chromium electrolytic plating of a thickness of from 0.00012-0.0002 inch. The gear is then heated for thirty minutes at 960 DEG C., cooled for two hours at -80 DEG C. and heated for two hours at 400 DEG C. The part is then sand-blasted and the chromium plating removed electrolytically and a dehydrogenization treatment is carried out. Grinding may then be carried out with a corresponding pinion and rectification of centres with respect to the teeth may be made. Final electrolytic polishing and passivation steps are then effected.
