Abstract

Woven, non-woven and knitted fabrics composed of a polymer containing at least 80% by weight of acrylonitrile having a napped pile are treated with an aqueous solution of dimethyl acetamide, dimethyl formamide or dimethyl sulphoxide dried to evaporate the water from the solution and to set, cure and concentrate the stabilizing agent at the intersections of the fibres in the nap to form a durable band between and among them to prevent pilling and shedding of the nap. The aqueous solution which may contain 0.05-50% by weight of the dimethyl formamide, dimethyl acetamide or dimethyl sulphoxide may be applied to the fabric by padding or spraying and the fabric may then be dried and cured by heating at a temperature of 240 DEG -300 DEG F. for 5-60 minutes. The treating solution may also contain antistatic agents, e.g. polyamine resins formed by cross linking diethylene triamine with polyethylene glycol diiodide and epoxy resins, softeners, e.g. silicones, polybutadiene, or water repellent agents, e.g. melamine derivatives. The fabrics may be made from polyacrylonitrile, copolymers containing at least 80% by weight of acrylonitrile, or a blend comprising polyacrylonitrile or copolymers comprising acrylonitrile with 2-50% by weight of another polymeric material the blend having an overall polymerized acrylonitrile content of at least 80% by weight. The acrylonitrile may be copolymerized with acrylic, a -chloroacrylic or methacrylic acid, methyl, ethyl, butyl, methoxy methyl or b chloro ethyl methacrylate, acrylate or a -chloroacrylate, vinyl chloride, fluoride or bromide, vinylidiene chloride, 1-chloro-1-bromo-ethylene, methacrylonitrile, acrylamide, methacrylamide, a chloroacrylamide, methylvinyl ketone, vinylacetate, chloracetate, propionate or stearate, N-vinylsebacimide, N-vinylsuccinimide, methylene malenic esters, itacenic acid and esters thereof, N-vinyl carbozole, vinyl furane, alkyl vinyl esters, vinyl-sulphonic acid, diethylcitaconate, diethylmesaconate, styrene, vinylnaphthalene, vinylpyridines, 1 vinylimidazole and alkyl substituted 1-vinyl-imidazoles.
