Abstract

Refractory bricks are made by moistening with water a non-acid refractory mix embodying magnesia, moulding, and treating, while still moist, for 6-12 hours at 50 DEG C. with a gas which has been compressed so that its partial pressure of carbon dioxide is at least 1/2 atmosphere and its relative humility exceeds 50%. The gases preferably contain 15 to 40% of carbon dioxide and waste gases from certain specified processes can be used. Dilute sulphuric acid can form a supplementary bond, and the mixes specified are magnesia, chromite or their mixtures. When chromite is used alone, magnesia is present as an impurity. At least 5% magnesia should be present.
