964,938. Transfers. JOHNSON, MATTHEY & CO. Ltd. July 15, 1963 [July 17, 1962], No. 27390/62. Heading B6C. A decalcomania of the covercoat support film type, in which the design is applied to a gummed paper backing 1 beneath a support film 4 which constitutes the covercoat, comprises a design layer 2 formed of, or comprising, a goldcontaining composition, a covercoat support film formed of a resin-based material and, between the design layer and the covercoat film, a protective layer 3 of an oxidisable or polymerisable material which is impervious to the covercoat material and is inert to the gold in the design layer. The protective layer may comprise an alkyd, phenolic, urea or epoxy resin or a drying or semi-drying oil such as linseed or tung oil. Alternatively it may comprise the following composition-short oil alkyd resin (60% non- volatile in xylol) 25%, cellulose nitrate 6.25%, plasticizer 6.25%, high boiling solvent 62.5%. The support film may have the following composition-methyl methacrylate resin 54%, aromatic hydrocarbon 36%, phthalate plasticizer 2.4%, diluent 7.6%. The design layer may comprise a " liquid gold " preparation or a mixture of such a preparation and one or more ceramic colours or vitrifiable enamels.
