Abstract

[Also in Division C1] In bonding a decalcomania containing a pigment and an organic material to ceramic ware there is interposed between the ware and the decalcomania a bonding agent comprising a solvent for the organic material and a moderating agent, the moderating agent being a liquid miscible with the solvent and moderating its rate of attack on the organic material. The solvent may comprise an alcohol, ether alcohol, ketone, ester, terpene, aliphatic or aromatic hydrocarbon, a nitrogen heterocyclic compound or mixtures thereof. The moderating agent may be a polyhydroxy compound, a secondary or tertiary terpene alcohol, a water-soluble drying oil, water or mixtures thereof. Up to 10% by weight of a thickening agent, e.g. a cellulosic material, may be included in the bonding agent. A glaze composition may be applied over the decalcomania without a preliminary firing to drive off the organic material and for green ware, a preliminary layer of glaze may also be used. Many examples of solvent, moderating agent and thickening agent are given.
