Abstract
Substrates are chemically plated with precious metals of the platinum group, i.e. Pt, Pd, Rh, Ir, Os and Ru, using their salt solutions in organic solvents in the presence of reducing agents, by heating in an alkaline atmosphere. The alkaline atmosphere is usually provided by ammonia but other gaseous bases such as amines may be used. The reducing agent may be an organic reducing agent which is dissolved in the organic solvent or it may be in the form of a gas admixed with the alkaline-reacting gas, or preferably it may be a combination of both reducing means. The treatment is conducted at a temperature below 500 DEG C., preferably at about 350 DEG C. The precious metal salts are chlorides but may also be bromides or iodides. The organic solvent is isopropyl alcohol but may be acetone and/or other ketones and alcohols. The reducing agent is linalsol, i.e. coriandrol but may be replaced by etherical oils such as anise oil, lavender oil, or bergamot oil. A base metal plate, particularly Ti, coated with precious metal to serve as an anode is preferably subjected to an after heat-treatment at 400-500 DEG C. for 4-150 hours optionally with the addition of ammonia to the furnace atmosphere. Where the reducing agent is used in gaseous form, together with the alkaline-reacting gas, it may be towns' gas, methane, Co or H2. Cathodes having a core of stainless steel or nickel coated with precious metal may be made by this invention. Other substrates named are glass, tantalum, activated carbon, silica gel and other materials coated with precious metals for use as catalysts. Titanium plates for treatment are degreased and then cleaned in concentrated HCl by connection to an A.C. source. Current is passed at a current density of 5 amps./dm.2 and at 1 volt for 1-60 minutes, e.g. 15 minutes. After the current is cut off the plates remain in the acid for 5 minutes, are then removed, washed and dried at 700 DEG C. The solution may be applied to the substrates by immersion or brushing. A solution of a mixture of salts may be used so that after reduction an alloy is plated, e.g. 70% Pt 30% Ir, 70% Pt 30% Rh.
