Abstract

964,834. Steam turbines. PAMETRADA. Jan. 4, 1963 [June 20, 1962], No. 23691/62. Heading F1T. A steam turbine comprises a rotary barrier mounted on the rotor downstream of and coaxially with a stage of blading, the periphery of the barrier extending at least in part beyond the peripheral diameter of the preceding blading, the barrier being arranged so as to deflect the steam and water mixture emerging from the preceding stage of blading generally radially outwardly, water collecting means provided for collecting water flung from the periphery of the barrier by centrifugal force. In a first embodiment, Fig. 1, the barrier 1 is in the form of a disc forming an integral part of the turbine rotor 2. Water droplets are flung from the periphery of the disc into the annular water collecting channel 4, the entry to the channel being defined by annular members 7, 8 which are shaped with lips to assist retention of water in the channel. In Figs. 2 and 2a the periphery of the disc 11 is formed with semi-circular scallops 13, the scallops lying radially outwardly of the outer periphery of the preceding row of rotor blades. The entry to the annular water collecting channel is defined by members 16, 20. An auxiliary water collecting channel 19 is defined by the member 20, this channel serving to collect water flung from the shroud ring of the rotor blades 14. The scallops 13 are formed with a raised edge 18, and the disc is provided with radial grooves 17 to guide the water droplets. In Figs. 3 and 3a the disc 21 is formed with circular apertures 23 towards the periphery, ring members 24 being secured within the apertures. The ring members 24 may be formed with rims which define gutters at the upstream face of the disc. In Figs. 4, 4a, 4b the barrier is formed of segmental pieces 31 which are secured to the periphery of the rotor 32 in a similar manner to the blades 14. The segmental pieces are of generally I-section form, (see Fig. 4b) and together define inlet apertures 33 at the upstream face, and outlet apertures 34 towards the outer periphery at the downstream face.
