Abstract

Foundry mould dressing compositions comprise a dispersion of finely divided solid particles of fluorocarbon polymer of irregular shape in a liquid carrier. The irregular particles have an average axial diameter of 5-700 microns and an average length at least twice the average axial diameter. Specified fluorocarbon polymers are polytetrafluoroethylene, tetrafluoroethylene propylene copolymer, hexafluoro polychlorotrifluoroethylene, polyvinylidene fluoride, polyvinyl fluoride, polyhexafluoropropylene and the copolymer of vinylidene fluoride or hexafluoropropylene. Specified carriers are water, hydrocarbons such as hexane, heptane, octane, kerosene; halogenated hydrocarbons such as methylene chloride, trichlorethylene, Perclene, chlorobenzene, or "Freons" (Registered Trade Mark); aromatics such as benzene, toluene and xylene; ethers such as dioxane, esters such as methyl acetate, ethyl acetate, propyl acetate and butyl acetate and ketones such as acetone and methyl ethyl ketone; natural oils such as fish oil, cottonseed oil and linseed oil; molasses. The composition may also comprise dispersing and wetting agents, dyes and thickeners.
