Abstract

The invention comprises monoazo dyes of formula <FORM:0964673/C4-C5/1> wherein X is a chlorine or bromine atom or a nitro group, Y is an acylamino group which may be chlorine or bromine substituted in the hydrocarbon chain or an alkoxycarboxylamino group containing 1-4 carbon atoms. The dyes are obtained by coupling a suitably substituted diazotized o-aminophenol with 2-hydroxy-5,6,7,8-tetrahydronaphthalene. The dyes give brown shades on wool when dyeing is by the metachrome process. In examples dyes prepared from the following diazo components are specified:-2-amino-4-nitro-6-acetylamino- or -propionylamino- or -formylamino- or -chloroacetyl-amino-phenol and 2-amino-4-chloro-6-acetylamino- or -propionylamino-phenol.
