Abstract

964,652. Variable resistors. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. (International Standard Electric Corporation). May 2, 1963, No. 17373/63. Heading H1S. [Also in Division H2] The Specification discloses a variable resistor whose resistance varies smoothly from about 0.2 to 5 ohms for controlling EHT voltage and picture width in a television receiver (see Division H2 and Fig. 1, not shown). A moulded carbonaceous disc 65 is supported on a metal bracket 60 which also forms one terminal and has lugs 67 arranged to fit recesses in the disc. A conical spring 78 of conducting material is pressed against the disc by the insulated adjusting screw 70, so that movement of the screw 70 varies the area of contact between the ring and the disc. The base end of the spring is located in a recess 82 in the disc to prevent rotation. This construction allows the resistor to dissipate as much as six watts in heat.
