Abstract

Alcohols containing at least eight carbon atoms that have been obtained by, first, reacting olefines to form alkyl aluminium, e.g. by the Ziegler process, then oxidising to aluminium alcoholates and finally hydrolysing, are purified by dissolving in a mixture containing at least one paraffin hydrocarbon having 4 to 10 carbon atoms, and at least one compound selected from aromatic hydrocarbons and aliphatic ethers, cooling the solution to effect alcohol crystallisation and collecting the crystals. The alcohol is preferably dissolved in the mixture at the boiling point of the mixture. The preferred precipitant hydrocarbons are n-pentane, n-hexane, n-heptane, and iso-octane, and the preferred solvents are benzene, toluene, xylene, n-propyl ethers, and iso-propyl ethers. The ratio of paraffin to aromatic hydrocarbon and/or aliphatic ether is preferably from 10:1 to 1:10 by weight. Crystallisation is preferably carried out at from 20-40 DEG C. and the crystals may be washed with a further quantity of the mixture and then dried.
