The speed of an aircraft is obtained at a ground station by transmitting a continuous or pulsed wave on a frequency F from the aircraft towards the ground, obtaining the Doppler frequency shift at the aircraft receiver, modulating the frequency shift on to wave F, and demodulating the latter at the ground station. The range of the aircraft is found by integrating the frequency shift. The apparatus in the aircraft may comprise an oscillating detector, Fig. 2 (not shown), or super-regenerative apparatus incorporating a quenching circuit Qu.
