Abstract

A composition comprises a high molecular weight polyoxymethylene, a polyurethane and a phenol derivative having at least one alkyl or phenol group in the orthoposition to the hydroxyl group. Preferred preparations have from 0.1 to 2.0% of the phenol derivative and 0.02 to 10% of the polyurethane, the ratio of phenol to urethane lying between 1:1 and 1:10. Specified phenols are 2-6-di-tert-butyl-alpha-methoxy-p-cresol, 4-41-methylene-bis-(2-6-di-tert-butyl phenol), 4-41-thio-bis-(6-tert-butyl-3-methyl phenol), 2-21-methylene-bis(4-methyl-6-tert-butyl phenol) and 2-6-di-tert-butyl-alpha - dimethylamino - p - cresol. Specified polyurethanes are polyhexamethylene-tetramethylene urethane, polydicarmethylene-octamethylene urethane, polytetramethylene-hexamethylene urethane and the polyadditive reaction products of 2-5-bis-(beta-isocyanate ethyl) furan and tetramethylene glycol and of tetramethylene diisocyanate and hexantriol. The polyoxymethylene may contain glycol, dicarboxylate or diether end groups. The polymethylene and polyurethane may be used as catalysts in the vapour polymerization of formaldehyde and retained in the polymer or they can be added to the polymer.
