Abstract

A halogen scavenger-free leaded gasoline fuel composition consists of (a) gasoline containing from 10 to 60 volume per cent of aromatic gasoline hydrocarbons based on the total volume of the gasoline, (b) an alkyl lead antiknock agent present in the gasoline in amount equivalent to 1-5 grams of elemental lead per U.S. gallon, (c) a mixture of different fused-ring aromatic hydrocarbons having boiling points at atmospheric pressure of at least 180 DEG C. and containing up to 20 carbon atoms in the molecule, said mixture being present in amount equivalent to 5-30 parts by weight per 100 parts by weight of said antiknock agent, and (d) a triaryl phosphate ester in which the aryl groups are phenyl, tolyl, cresyl, or xylyl, the phosphorus content of the composition ranging from 0.2-0.6 theory based on the lead content of the composition. Constituents (a), (b), (c) and (d) are adequately exemplified. Optional additives mentioned are N,N1-di-sec.-butyl-p-phenylene diamine, p - N - butylaminophenol, alkyl phenols (examples are given), N,N1-disalicylidene - 1,2 - diaminopropane, methanol, isopropanol, primary alkyl amine salts of alkyl acid orthophosphates, dyes, and b -hydroxyethyl ethylenediamine amides of oleic acid.
