Abstract

An antiknock fluid composition suitable for addition to gasoline comprises (a) an organolead antiknock agent, suitably tetraethyl lead, (b) cyclopentadienyl manganese tricarbonyl or an alkylcyclo-pentadienyl manganese tricarbonyl antiknock agent in which the alkyl group contains 1-12 carbon atoms, the methyl derivative being preferred, and (c) a quantity sufficient to inhibit deterioration caused by (b) of one of the following stabilizers:-(i) a neutral salt formed from a primary alkylamine containing 8-18 carbon atoms and a dialkyl acid o-phosphate in which the alkyl groups each contain 5-12 carbon atoms, the salt of the amine from coconut alcohols and 3-methylbutyl-2-ethylhexyl acid o-phosphate being preferred; (ii) a p-alkyl-aminophenol in which the aklyl group contains up to 6 carbon atoms, any of the p-butylaminophenols being preferred; (iii) an N:N1-dialkyl-p-phenylene diamine in which each alkyl group has up to 6 carbon atoms, N:N1-di-sec. butyl-p-phenylenediamine being preferred; (iv) a 4-alkoxy-2:6-dialkylphenol in which the alkyl groups and the alkoxy group each contain 1-6 carbon atoms, 4-methoxy-2:6-di-tert. butylphenol being preferred; and (v) a 3:31:5:51-tetraalkyl-4:41-dihydroxydiphenyl in which the 3 and 5 alkyl groups each contain 1-6 carbon atoms, and the 31 and 51 alkyl groups have 3-6 carbon atoms and are both branched on the alpha carbon atom. Many suitable compounds of types (c) (i)-(v) above are specified. In general the composition contains 0,00078-30 parts by weight of manganese per part of lead, and 0,1-5% by weight of stabilizer based on the organolead compound and is made up as a concentrate in gasoline which is subsequently diluted to give a stabilizer concentration of about 0,0002-0,01% by weight. Scavengers, e.g. ethylene dichloride, ethylene dibromide, 2:3-dibromobutane, trichlorobenzenes and dibromotoluenes, in concentrations of 0,5-2,5 theories of halogen based on the lead, corrective agents, e.g. esters of phosphorus, arsenic, or antimony, metal deactivators, e.g. N:N1-disalicylidene-1:2-diaminopropane, dyes, solvents and diluents may also be incorporated.
