Abstract

964, 272. Woven fabrics; fibrous fabrics; yarns and threads. DOW CHEMICAL CO. April 21, 1961 [April 27, 1960], No. 14597/61. Headings D1K, D1R and D1W. A fabric made entirely or partly from thermoplastic microtapes folded or rolled on themselves so as to have a labyrinthian cross-section is calendered or embossed at a temperature and pressure that does not cause plastic flow. The tapes may be folded zig-zag or as shown in Fig. 4, or may be rolled as shown in Fig. 5, or the two edges of the tape may be folded or rolled as shown in Fig. 4 or 5; they may be laminates of identical or different layers, or may consist of separate strips plaited together; they may be individually twisted, or may be plied together. The tapes are preferably microporous and may be a copolymer of vinylidene chloride with acrylonitrile or a lower alkyl acrylate. The pressure brings the constituent layers of the tape into contact, thereby making the tape thin and transparent over the whole area of the fabric or in a pattern; in pigmented tapes, the colour becomes more intense. The compression also reduces the permeability of the fabric to liquids and gases. The fabric may be woven, or may be made by bonding together randomly disposed filaments, or bonding together continuous filaments running in one direction with randomly disposed cut filaments. In an example, a fabric woven from a warp of natural microtapes and a weft of pigmented microtapes is embossed to produce a pattern of solid weft colour in the compressed areas, the warp remaining opaque in the uncompressed areas. A similar effect is obtained using cotton or nylon as warp or weft with microtapes in the other direction.
