Abstract

A chain knit fabric has lines of chain stitching secured together by layers of inter-woven warp and weft yarns such that the lines of chain stitching extend in the direction of the warp yarns along the cross-over points of the warp and weft yarns. The warp and weft yarns are not interwoven but merely superimposed, and corresp. warp and weft yarns pass through the same stitch of a line of chain stitching. The chain stitching thus maintains the warp and weft yarns in their wet configuration. The fabric may be coated on one face with a plastic (e.g., PVC, polyurethane, rubber). Pref. two warp and weft yarns have a greater denier than the stitch yarns. The fabric is sufficiently fine to prevent the plastic coating from penetrating to the other face. The fabric is strong, resistant to tearing and stretches by equal amts. in both transverse and longitudinal directions.
