Abstract

Cellulosic textile materials, e.g. cotton, sisal and regenerated cellulose fibres, which may have been coloured or brightened, are protected from the injurious effects of light by treating them with an organic solvent solution of a polymer which contains at least one 2-(21 hydroxyphenyl)-benztriazole compound of the formula <FORM:0964231/D1-D2/1> in which A and B may be substituted in the 5, 31, 41 and 51 positions by new colour producing substituents, e.g. hydrocarbon radicals, halogen atoms, ether or diether groups, carboxylic acid or sulphonic acid ester or amide groups or alkyl sulphenyl or aryl sulphenyl groups. Suitable polymers are addition polymers of at least one ethylenically unsaturated vinyl or vinylidene monomer, e.g. vinyl chloride, vinyl acetate, vinylidene chloride, styrene, methyl acrylate, butylacrylate and methyl methacrylate, homopolymers of aliphatic conjugated dienes having 4-6 carbonatoms, copolymers of aliphatic conjugated dienes having 4-6 carbon atoms with styrene or acrylonitrile, polyesters, polyamides, precondensates of urea and/or melamine with aldehydes, e.g. formaldehyde or fruthural, cellulose ethers and cellulose ethers and cellulose esters. Polymers plasticized internally or externally, e.g. polyvinyl chloride externally plasticized with dioctyl phthalate and vinyl chloride polymers internally plasticized by copolymerisation with vinyl stearate, may be used. The organic solvent may be tetrachloroethane, cyclohexame, benzene, toluene, chlorobenzene, dichlorobenzenes, acetone, methyl ethyl betane, ethyl acetate or butyl acetate. The treating solution may also contain as stabilizer dibutyl tin dilaurate. The cellulose fibres may have been brightened with <FORM:0964231/D1-D2/2> <FORM:0964231/D1-D2/3> <FORM:0964231/D1-D2/4> <FORM:0964231/D1-D2/5> <FORM:0964231/D1-D2/6> The treatment of sisal carpets is described.
