964,146. Linkwork. S. & S. CORRUGATED PAPER MACHINERY CO. Inc. Oct. 18, 1962, No. 39496/62. Heading F2K. A cyclically variable-speed drive for a cut-off knife mechanism comprises a shaft 5 driven at constant speed through chain gearing 4, an intermediate shaft 8 driven from shaft 5 through pinion 6 and gear 7, a link 9 secured to shaft 8 and connected to driven shaft 15 through pins 10, 12 and connecting links 11, 13 and counterbalancing means consisting of a link 101, diametrically opposed to link 9, and an arm 105 rotatably mounted on driven shaft 15 and connected to link 101 through pins 102, 104 and a link 103. A worm gear sector 36 carries the gear 7 and shaft 8 and may be rotated about the axis of shaft 5 by a worm 35 in order to adjust the cyclic speed variation. The chain gearing 4 is driven through cone pulleys 2 from a shaft 1 which also drives feed rollers 24, 25. Shaft 15 carries a knife drum 16 and drives a knife drum 21 through gears 18, 19. Variation of the sheet length is effected by operation of an electric motor 31 which rotates a shaft 34 carrying a worm 36 meshing a worm gear 47 on a screw shaft 48 operatively connected to a belt shifter fork 51. The shaft 34 also carries the worm 35 whereby corresponding adjustment of the maximum knife-cutting speed to occur at a point in the cycle when the knives are in mesh is effected. An indicator 45 is also driven from shaft 34. Arm 105 carries a counterbalance-wheel 106 and together they possess the same rotative inertia as the knife drums 16, 17. In a modification, the shaft 5 carries a pinion 5a, Fig. 6, meshing internally toothed gear 7a which is connected to a driver link 13a by a link 11a and to a counterbalancewheel 106a by a link 103a. In a further modification, counterbalance links 120, 110, 121, 111, 122, 112, Fig. 2, are provided. In another modification, the counterbalancing means and knives are driven through a pin and slotted member connection. U.S.A. Specification 2,202,872 is referred to.
