Abstract

<PICT:0964132/C3/1> <PICT:0964132/C3/2> <PICT:0964132/C3/3> <PICT:0964132/C3/4> The flat surfaces of two flat organic thermoplastic materials are placed in laminar contact and the non-contacting surfaces are exposed to an electrical discharge in a gas-filled space between spaced electrodes to render said surfaces printable. Flat organic thermoplastic materials are defined as including collapsed or flattened tubes, flat sheets, webs and films, and materials having only one flat surface, and an irregularly shaped opposite surface, so that one object can be placed over another with flat surfaces in contact. Films, e.g. of polyethylene or polypropylene, may be so treated, a potential difference being applied between the spaced electrodes sufficient to ionise the air in the gap between them and the films being passed out of said gap at a rate sufficient to render the exposed surfaces of said films printable. Voltages from 100-100,000v., preferably 2,000-100,000v. may be used, frequencies of 60-800,000 c.p.s., preferably 200,000-500,000 c.p.s., and currents of 0.5-5.5 r.f. amps., preferably 0.5-3.5 r.f. amps., a treatment intensity of 0.1-1.8 watt secs per sq. inch of film, preferably 0.2-1.0 watt secs. per sq. inch of film, being desirable. The energy level of the electrical discharge used should be below 15 electron volts, and the gap between the electrodes may be 0.005-0.25 inch, preferably 0.01-0.125 inch. Specification 921,308 is referred to.
