963,360. Coating apparatus. A. G. JEFFERYS, and MOLINS MACHINE CO. Ltd. May 31, 1962 [June 1, 1961], No. 19799/61. Heading B2B. An apparatus for applying patches of adhesive to both sides of a blank, comprises an adhesive container and a rotatable plate having an irregular periphery, at least one part of which is shaped to constitute an adhesive applying sector, the remainder of the periphery being of less radius than any such sector, said plate being arranged to dip into adhesive in the container, a doctor movable to doctor the periphery of the plates as it rotates, excepting at least part of such adhesive applying sector, means for operating the doctor, and means for moving the blank past the plate for adhesive application by the said adhesive applying sector and a transfer device arranged to receive adhesive from part of the sector and apply it to the reverse side of the blank, that is, the side remote from the rotatable plate. In the embodiment the apparatus comprises adhesive container 1, plates 2, 3 and 4 rotating in container 1, rails 8 for conveying blanks over the plates 2, 3 and 4 and doctors 10, 11 and 12. Above the blanks 5 are rollers 14, 15, 16 and 17, rollers 15 and 17 serving to hold the blanks down against the adhesive applying sectors and rollers 14 and 16 having pins 37 and 39 respectively, which pins take up adhesive from the adhesive applying sectors and applying it to the side of the blanks opposite the container 1. The means for operating the doctors comprise cams 28 and 29 rotatable with the plates 3 and 4 and 2 respectively and cam followers 30 and 31 attached to the doctors via shafts and urged into contact with the cams 28 and 29 by springs 26 and 27. The doctor preferably also doctors the sides of the plates inwards from the periphery. A further fixed doctor 42 may be included.
