963,281. Coiling. HEATH SPRING & NOTION CO. Ltd. Jan. 20, 1962 [Jan. 23, 1961], No. 2529/61. Heading B3E. A method of making helical wire springs, of the kind which when viewed in end elevation are of non-circular formation, comprises winding wire on to a former to form convolutions thereon and exerting pressure, otherwise than by the wire being bent, on the last formed convolution of the spring in a direction substantially axially of the spring so as to advance the said last formed convolution and thus also the previously formed convolutions from a take-up position at which the wire is bent around the former so that a take-up opening is provided at said take-up positions and into which take-up opening the wire to be bent can enter freely and without said wire exerting any or substantially any pressure axially of the spring on the last formed convolution of the spring. Wire 63 from a spool is guided by a member 61 to a flat former 30 held at one end in a collet 31 secured in a spindle 23 rotated by a pulley 24. The convolutions coiled on the former 30 are moved along the former by the engagement of the last formed convolution with a non-rotary split annular disc 48 set to helical form by a plunger 55 moved by an inclined face 56 of a screw 57, the wire 63 being bent over the former 30 free of pressure on the previously formed convolution. Square or triangular sectioned springs may be similarly formed.
