A measuring unit for measuring off lengths of material which is fed by a feed device, said unit comprising a switch actuating member, an electrically controlled clutch through which the switch actuating member is driven at the same time as the material is fed, a measuring switch which is actuated by the switch-actuating member to deenergize the clutch after the member has been driven through a spatial interval corresponding to the desired length, means for selecting the magnitude of the spatial interval, a starting switch which is actuated by the switch-actuating member, to energize the clutch, after the member has been returned through the spatial interval to an initial position, and means for returning the switch-actuating member to the initial position. As shown a shaft 11a driven by movement of the feed roll of the material is connected by an electromagnetic clutch 18a to a rotor arm 23a with projections 32a, 40a. Rotation of arm 23a from its starting position causes the projection 40a to operate a measuring switch 33a adjustably mounted on a block 16 so that the length to be measured off can be adjusted. A shaft 11b driven by shaft 11a through reduction gearing 17 is similarly provided with an arm 23b and switch 33b. When both switches 33a, 33b are in the operated position, the feed stops, the clutch 18a is disconnected and a rewind motor 26 is operated to return arms 23a, 23b to the starting position where projections 32a, 32b operate starting switches 27a, 27b through members 29a, 29b to re-engage clutch 18a. Dials 34a, 34b are provided to set the position of measuring switches 33a, 33b and these dials may be adapted to compensate for over-run of the feed rolls after the drive thereto is stopped.
