Abstract
962,331. Wet presses of paper-making machines. BELOIT IRON WORKS. Oct. 26, 1960 [Feb. 19,1960 (2); March 9, 1960], No. 36806/60. Heading D2A. A divided press arrangement comprises a pair or imperforate rolls acting as a wet press, followed by a suction press roll operating on the felt only. A web W on a Fourdrinier wire-cloth, after passing a suction couch roll 11 with a save-all 13 is couched by a suction pick-up 15a on to a felt 14 which carries it through a suction wet-press nip N, the upper roll of which may be hard rubber-coyered, and have 'blind' holes in its outer surface to receive water pressed out of the pick-up felt 14; such water being returned to the felt at the off-running side of the nip. Conventional felt-washing and wringing devices may thereafter operate on the felt. The web W then passes through a press 25 the upper, suction roll of which has a save-all 28, and the lower roll 27 may be rubber-covered, and through a plain press 36, the felt 39 of which then passes through a suction press 42 to remove a predetermined amount of water from the felt so that it is an optimum condition for removing water from the web at the plain press. In modifications: the upper side of the web W may contact a plain roll of the plain press 36, instead of the wire side as illustrated: there may be an upper and a lower felt passing through the plain press, the lower felt passing a water shower before or after entering a suction press: the shower and the press pressures may be under control of a moisture-detection appliance. An anti-deflection roll is described in which the shaft has a passageway for inflating hollow, resilient rings which surround the shaft and which bear against the inside of the shell of the roll, the pressure within the hollow rings being such that deflection due to nip loading is negligible. This way be used for one or both rolls of the last wet press. The shell may be elastomeric and may be drilled with blind holes. Alternatively press roll shells may be of porous ceramic. Specification 962,332 is referred to.
