In sealing means between relatively rotatable parts 21, 24 comprising a split sealing ring 28 which is held by its resilience in rotationally fixed sealing contact with one, 21, of the parts, extends into an annular groove 23 in one or the other of the parts and is urged axially by the pressure of the fluid to be sealed into sealing contact with the other part 24, the axial sealing force is reduced by providing a recess 32 in the other part or in the ring which recess is open to the fluid pressure and the appropriate corner of the ring is removed as at 33 to delay formation of a thin lip of metal extending between parts 21 and 24 when wear of the ring occurs. In the embodiment shown in Figs. 1 and 2, in which oil under pressure is supplied through a conduit 22, groove 23 and conduits 27 to actuate a piston 26 in the part 24, two phosphor bronze split rings 28, separated by a perforated spacer 29, are disposed in the groove 23. In a modification, Fig. 4, parts 34, 35 relatively rotatable about an axis 36 are sealed against leakage of oil passing between them through conduits 37 and 38 by inner and outer split sealing rings 42 and 41 respectively frictionally held in a groove 39 in the part 34 and urged axially by fluid pressure against the part 35 which is recessed at 40 to reduce the sealing force on each ring. In a further modification a sealing ring is located in each of two grooves which communicate with one another.
