Abstract

962,079. Steam traps. CLARK-RELIANCE CORPORATION. Feb. 7, 1963, No. 4997/63. Heading F4U. A floating-disc type steam trap comprises a trap body 11 having inlet and outlet openings 12, 13 adapted for connection into a steam system and connected by passages 22, 23 to an intermediate chamber 21; the passages terminating at the intermediate chamber in two annular seating surfaces 26, 27, one spaced from and surrounding the other, and the intermediate chamber contains a free-standing disc 16 the bottom of which has sealing surfaces for engagement with the seating surfaces 26, 27. In operation, air and condensate entering the trap through the inlet 12 and central opening 20, force the disc 16 away from the seat member 15, allowing the air and condensate to pass through the trap to waste. A pressure build-up of flash steam from the last portion of condensate to enter the chamber 21, forces the disc back into contact with the seat member 15, thus closing the trap. Subsequent reduction of pressure in the chamber 21 due to heat losses, and to leakage through the bleeder passage 32, again permits lifting of the valve by a further accumulation of condensate.
