Abstract
962,043. Photo-electric control devices. BROOKHIRST IGRANIC Ltd. July 26, 1962 [Sept. 12, 1961], No. 28734/62. Heading G1A. In an electrical control device for example for controlling the regulator of an electric motor, an opaque shade 16 is movable between a light source in the form of a luminescent surface 10 and a light sensitive surface of a photo-electric means to vary the illuminated area of the light sensitive surface and thus vary an electrical parameter of the said photo-electric means to vary an output from the device, said surfaces being arranged substantially parallel and close together whereby the light sensitive surface would be substantially uniformly illuminated but for the said shade. In the embodiment shown an arcuate shade 16 secured to a control rod 18 pivoted at 20 is movable between an electroluminescent panel 10 connected to an A. C. supply, and a pair of selfgenerating selenium cells 12 and 14 each independently connected to a motor regulator (not shown) by lines 15, 17 and 19, 21 respectively to provide a pure D. C. voltage to control the speed of the motor. The shade is shaped as shown in Fig. 2 to allow an increasing amount of light to fall on one cell or the other as the shade is moved to the right or left, with a corresponding increase in low power D. C. voltage from the exposed cell in a manner directly related to the contour of the shade. In a further embodiment (Fig. 3 not shown) the shade is shaped to provide a "dead" band when the control rod is initially moved from its central position between the cells in either direction with a slowly increasing light intensity on one cell, and in another embodiment (Fig. 4 not shown) the shade is shaped to allow a small amount of light to reach both cells when the control rod 18 is in the central position and increases the light intensity on one cell rapidly on movement of the rod from this position. Variation of the intensity of the light from the panel 10 by varying its applied A. C. voltage may be used to provide an additional control and variation of the frequency of the applied A. C. voltage which will alter the wavelength of the light emitted by the panel 10 may be used in conjunction with coloured filters between-the panel and the cells 12 and 14 to provide a third control.
