Abstract

A flexibilising curing agent for epoxy resins is prepared by reacting a diglycidyl ether of a polyoxyalkylene glycol with more than an equimolecular proportion of a polyamine having at least two amino hydrogen atoms. Suitable polyamines are ethylenediamine, propylenediamine, diethylenetriamine, dipropylenetriamine N1N11-bis (2-cyanoethyl) - diethylenetriamine, trialkylene tetramine, tetra-alkylenepentamine, and their N-substituted derivatives, e.g. N,N1, N11, N111-tetra (2 cyanoethyl)-triethylenetetramine. The diglycidyl ether may be of a polyoxyethylene glycol, polyoxypropylene glycol, or polyoxybutylene glycol, or of mixed polyoxyalkylene glycols, or of a polyoxyalkylene glycol containing two or more different oxyalkylene groups. Examples are given of the preparation of curing agents according to the invention and of their use to cure epoxy resins.
